But after the fall of Chancellor Bruning in 1932, this ideologically-based antipathy was no longer a valid premise for practical political action, since any successful collaboration between the Centre Party and the SPD was also blocked on ideological grounds. In the first years of the Third Reich, we find new tendencies towards accommodation with Nazism, as well as the still continuing ideological opposition. These conflicting policies were in part due to the desire to remain in step with the episcopal hierarchy, which showed similar tendencies to trim its attitudes towards the new regime. On the other hand, the Catholic Workers' League Newspaper, when reflecting on Christian social teachings, had no clearly thought-out appreciation of or attachment to democracy. But from the middle 1930s, these positive steps diminished and the attempts grew at immunizing the readers against National Socialism. Admittedly, these efforts were restricted by the increasing censorship imposed on the press. In 1939, after repeated short-term warnings and bans, the newspaper was finally forbidden to publish. Its stance oscillated between defence of the church's autonomy, and the broader demands of the Ten Commandments. The former appear to have been stressed more often. But principally the concern was to preserve the Catholic milieu as a separate community life-style.
