Description
Summary:The Italian Methodist Church was formed in 1946 by a union of the methodistwesleyan and the methodist-episcopal communities. In 1979 they joined with the Waldensian Church. The Methodists conceive of their social work activities, not merely as a charitable work, but as part of the process for the liberation of a truly just society. Examples can be found over the last two centuries. Today, protestant schools are actively building up and strengthening a plural society, having learnt over many years from the social problems encountered in the backward areas of southern Italy – problems which have again surfaced with the waves of new immigrants. The result is that since the 19th century Italian Methodists have inclined to a socialist perspective, and are engaged in working out the issues involved in Christian Socialism. In particular the Ecumenical Centre in Mezzano Inferiore has been actively involved in discussing the impact of rapid change in culture and society. It seeks to arm itself with examples of "Christian freedom" in order to protect a united Italian society against the dangers of intolerance, discrimination and racism.
