520 |a The Baptist Church is the largest free church in Germany, and has a long and rich history. It prides itself on its tradition of having a separatist and congegational polity while set in the midst of territorially-organized and established Protestant Volkskirchen. This article describes its history over the past fifty years. After a brief outline of the fate of the Baptists during the Third Reich, the main emphasis is on the post-1945 developments. The community has been involved in a number of controversies, such as the nature of the unity between Baptist and Brethren conventions, the re-establishment of ecumenical contacts with the Baptist World Alliance, how to deal with the question of guilt for the Nazi past and the subsequent denazification processes, the issues of rebuilding the church structures, and the establishment of a national ecumenical collaborative body, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft christlicher Kirchen (AcK). An examination of the role of this church in the former East Germany shows that the Union of German Evangelical Free Churches was involved in a long series of political and legal battles. The aim was to preserve and expand the rights of a minority church. Above all, this essay seeks to explore how the free churches have tried to advance the cause of the separation of church and state in the turbulent years since 1945.
