Pope John Paul II has called for a "new evangelization of Europe". Others see as an alternative the transformation of Christianity into a kind of civil religion based on human rights. The Catholic response to this kind of pluralistic pressure can be seen in the controversy over abortion counseling. On the Protestant side, two different responses to this pluralization have emerged. One suggests the church should itself adopt a pluralistic model in response to the variety of religious needs. The other suggests the advocacy of the kind of civil religion which both embraces but also limits pluralism. Both concepts would seem to be highly problematic from a religiously sociological as well as a theological point of view. | ||
