Shortly before his death on 19 March 2000, Bonhoeffer's friend and biographer, Eberhard Bethge, asked me to undertake the task of answering these charges. I have sought to establish the following points: 1) the part Judaism played in Bonhoeffer's life and thought; 2) the causal relationship between National Socialist policy and the destruction of European Jewry; 3) the correction of a series of misunderstandings and inaccurate contentions; 4) the categorical distinction between the 'eliminationist' racial antisemitism of the Nazis, and the kind of anti-Judaism which can be traced back to the New Testament; 5) the evidence for the beginnings of a new understanding in Christian-Jewish relations. | ||
