Church history does not belong solely to one Church, but to all the churches. Unfortunately history has also brought about the divisions within the church family. So it is only through its study in an ecumenical and constructive fashion that we can hope to overcome these historically-caused divisions and heal the wounds, and thereby recognise the wider links which bind all churches together. By participating in this endeavour, which is really participating in the life of the Church of Jesus Christ, we may find the opportunity to realise a true ecumenicity, because all churches have the same origin and share the same transcendent view of history's goal. Every historical event points beyond itself, and raises questions about the meaning of each event in its wider context and its significance for the future. For this reason, we should strive to find those common characteristics in the writing of church history, which should be equally valid for both Protestant and Roman Catholic theology, and thereby point the way forward to making significant progress towards the unity of the whole Church. | ||
