Description
Summary:The Polish Jesuit journal Przeglqd Powszechny has been published in Cracow for over a hundred years, and is one of Europe's leading Catholic publications with a high intellectual content. Contemporary historians will therefore find it interesting to see how this journal sought to deal with the ideas and policies of the Nazis, and where the chief emphasis and interpretations were placed. Four questions are pertinent: what was presented, what recognised, what mistaken, and what passed over in silence? The journal clearly set out to portray the Nazi regime's debates with the Catholic church, its pseudo-religious ideology, the apotheosis of the nation state with its compulsory merging of Party and State, and in consequence the totalitarian character of the regime. Early on the dangerous ambitions of Hitler's foreign policy with the risk of a new European war were recognised. However too often Nazi policy was mistakenly seen as merely a continuation of the earlier Prussian policies towards Poland. Equally mistaken, and even frequently ignored, was the Nazi persecution of internal non-religious opponents, especially the extent and virulence of the anti-Jewish measures. So Przeglqd Powszechny demonstrated both in its explicit treatments and in its onesided explanations its character as a very Polish and Catholic publication.
