A decisive role in this process was played by the Catholic movement for Mental Hygiene, which was first founded in the 1930s with the task of organising mental health care for Catholics in their own setting. But increasingly, from the beginning of the 1950s, this movement began to be involved, not only with its own member' mental health, but also with what its leaders believed were the unhealthy impacts of doctrinal beliefs amongst Dutch Catholics. One of their main objects was to "liberate" their fellow Catholics from their fears and mental captivities. But this drew the movement on to the territory of "spiritual affairs" — actually with great success. Particularly in the 1950 a well organised and deliberately planned social movement developed under the leadership of a group of experienced "actors" and "experts". They created an extensive network of services and institutions offering mental hygiene, where the emphasis for care was changed from the previous spiritual and pastoral assistance to a new stress on professional psychological treatment and psychotherapeutical expertise. One of the results was to foster the de-confessionalisation and secularisation of the Catholic population in the Netherlands. And this had profound effets on the position of Catholicism in society. | ||
