These structures allow Evangelicals, primarily conservative forces from both the regional and the free churches, to bring to bear their point of view in opposition to existing church institutions and the modern-liberal trends official churches fail to criticize. One of the most important initiatives in this regard involves the area of church publications. Leading evangelical groups cooperated in 1970-71 to found the "Information Service of the Evangelical Alliance" ("Informationsdienst der Evangelischen Allianz" or idea), intended to work as a supplement and corrective to the official "Protestant Press Service" ("Evangelischer Pressedienst" or epd). From modest beginnings idea developed into an effective mouthpiece of the evangelical movement, increasingly recognized even by the official church, the Protestant Church of Germany ("Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland" or EKD), as the second Protestant news service. The author advances the thesis that through successful public relations and, above all, through its innovative, largecirculation journal "idea-Spectrum," the Information Service has influenced important inner church debates and discussions. It has helped develop Evangelicals into a group which commands much greater attention in church and society today than it did twenty years ago. | ||
