The role of the churches and of Christians in the resistance or the Charter 77 movement were at first widely praised, but this was soon followed by a more sober analysis, which drew attention to such problem areas as collaboration with the State Security forces, or the so-called 'underground church'. Many Protestants began to criticise the World Council of Churches and the Conference of European Churches for their allegedly too sympathetic attitudes towards the previously dominant regimes in eastern Europa. The relationship between Protestants and the Orthodox or Greek Orthodox churches is a difficult problem. Ecumenical contacts are being developed within the Czechoslovakian Ecumenical Council, in which the Roman Catholic Church has an observer status. Historical factors play a considerable role. The celebrations for Comenius' quattro-centennial in 1992 brought together both churchmen and humanists, while the legacy of T. G. Masaryk remains alive in the minds of many Christians. Moral support is drawn from the personality of Vaclav Havel, whose relationship with Christianity is discussed. The question remains whether the churches will be able to reform and reactivate parallel structures in the new and more open society which now prevails. | ||
