One of the reasons was certainly the fixation in much of this research on the Nazi period, and the consequent moralising tone of much of the work produced. This led to a reluctance to engage in more fundamental analysis, and to treating the experiences of the German Democratic Republic as peripheral in much of the contemporary church historical research so far. So too, this research was influenced by its rejection of theories of totalitarianism and by 'anti-Communism'. What is now needed is for contemporary church historical research to become more energetic in recognizing itself as a theological discipline and to draw the appropriate consequences. | ||
