Not only is it a popular research subject (comprising about 15% of current historical production, with the active participation of some of the best representatives of the discipline), but there is a definite interest in it amongst readers-that is, not so much in church history in the traditional sense as in the history of religion. The origins of this turn towards the social and cultural history of religious life certainly go back to the inter-war era, and to the paradigma shift represented by the Annales school, the researches of G. le Bras and F. Boulard, and the positive effect of the increasing separation of church and state in French society. But it is even more closely connected with the arrival of the new generation of the 1960s, which led to the development of new approaches, making use uf new methods and new sources.
