Proceeding from Klaus Scholder's thesis that one cannot put an end to German history and its consequences when the German Constitutional Law is still in effect, this essay depicts the German Evangelical Church's past efforts to seek reconciliation, especially with the peoples of the Soviet Union. What follows is a theological reflection on the road to reconciliation, via an acknowledgement of guilt, not in the sense of self-accusation but as a release from the burden of guilt. The essay concludes by looking at the unfinished tasks of reconciliation, necessary for the success of any new European peace order. Its immediate background is the initiative in connection with the commemoration of the start of the war against the Soviet Union fifty years ago. | ||
