520 |a Although the World Alliance for International Friendship through the Churches was one of the most important ecumenical organisations before the Second World War, its history has been the subject of little research. The present essay examines the German World Alliance, its engagement in the War Guilt and Disarmament questions, and its relations to the established churches. Special attention is paid not only to the German participation in international conferences, such as those of Oud Wassenaer, Stockholm, Prague and Avignon, but also to the internal tensions in the German national executive. Despite the fact that the World Alliance made important contributions to the spread of ecumenical ideas, its hope of being recognised as the representative of the German Evangelical church was never achieved. By the 1930s the overwhelmingly nationalistic members of the established churches abandoned interest in the attempts at international reconciliation pursued by the World Alliance. At the same time, more radical pacifists deserted the World Alliance because of its compromising stance. My thesis is that the failure of the World Alliance cannot be described solely to its organisational shortcomings or its overly Utopian optimism, but rather to the irreconcilable tensions between the moderate pacifist demands of the World Alliance and its desire to gain influence in Germany by being recognised as the representative voice of German Protestantism.
