| 520 | |a After the second world war, and particularly in the 1960s, relations between the Finnish Lutheran churches and the churches of eastern Europe, not only the local protestant churches but above all the Russion Orthodox Church, grew much closer. The causes lay not only in Finland's geographical and political situation, but also in the growth of a new ecumenical climate. These increased inter-church contacts led to the situation and developments in the churches of eastern Europe becoming of more concern to Finnish theological scholars, not only in the field of systematic theology, but also amongst contemporary church historians. Since these developments were closely connected with the changes in relations between the Church and the State, we undertook a special research project on "Church-State relations in the socialist countries of eastern Europe", which sought to throw light on the growth of the various religious communities in these ideologically-dominated countries, as well as describing the methods by which the state tried to control their activities. On the other side, our interest was also aroused by the fact that the experience of these individual church groupings was very different from one another. Contemporary historical research on the churches of eastern Europe is now, in my opinion, one of our most important tasks, and requires a broad collaborative effort, especially with researchers from the eastern Europe countries. | ||
