520 |a The conflict between Karl Barth and Otto Dibelius on the concept of the Church was, after all, an argument turning on the concept of God. According to Dibelius, Jesus sets the Church the task to "actualise the Kingdom of God". God Himself in His Glory remains something like the abstract horizon over and against this actualisation. The Cross of Jesus Christ encourages us to keep this actualisation going and to struggle for the expansion of the Church in the world. That is why, one may say, the Church compensates for the lack of concreteness in the glory of God through temporal action. Yet, according to Barth, God defined His glory concretely in the Cross of Jesus Christ. The Curch can only respond to this glory in faith and humility. It will be critical of all worldly means and methods, if these are to play a role in their own right over and against the criterion of God's concrete glory in the process in which the Church is constituted. If today the sociology of religion advises the Church to act as an institution for the gratification of the religious needs of society, then this must mean a move of the Church away from its very nature. Karl Barths standpoint with regard to Otto Dibelius's worldly-triumphalistic concept of the Church still has its own value today in that it points to the truth that Christian ecclesiology must be guided by the concreteness of God.
