Description
Summary:Before the occupation zones were finally established in August 1945, the Soviet occupation power licensed political parties and installed an administration managed by Germans. Within these structures the churches were enabled to collaborate. New church leadings were constituted. Because of the extreme stress of the clergymen and the immense work which had to be done the traditional church structures were left nearly unchanged. In the course of an few years the collaboration of the churches in public life changed into confrontation with the SED. The subjects of the conflict were the criterions and the methods of social tranformation in the Soviet occupation zone. The main heritage of the church struggle proved to be a deeper concentration on the biblical word, but this did not endure, because the political and ethical challenges were not mastered.
