Description
Résumé:This review introduces a book written by Lothar Lies SJ about the Eucharist. Lies wants to serve the ecumenical talks between protestant and catholic Christians and to overcome controversial teachings about the Eucharist. He develops an anthropologically and theologically well-founded theory about feasts and celebrations and he expounds his views of the theological "Sinngestalt" (pattern) of the Eucharist (first chapter). After that, in the Chapters 2–5, he deals with the elements of this "Sinngestalt": anamnesis (praising memorial); epiclesis (invocation); praesentia realis (real presence); prosphora (sacrifice) and finally, in the sixth chapter the aim of the Eucharist: koinonia (communion). – Lies shows in all his chapters, how much consensus there already exists between catholics and protestants, where there are still controversial positions and how they possibly could be overcome. This review article explains the significance of this important book, not only for the ecumenical dialogue, but also for an adequate understanding of the eucharist itself, although it also points out various open questions.
