Ze spitst zich toe op één mogelijke lezing van Beloved, namelijk als spookverhaal. Hiermee biedt zij een bijdrage aan de polyglossia of spirit, de veelstemmigheid van de geest. Dat wil zeggen een spreken over de geest dat recht doet aan culturele en religieuze veelvormigheid en politiek en kosmologisch betrokken is. Het spook in Beloved wijkt af van de westerse spookverhalen. Het representeert een zekere continuïteit met de vertrouwde wereld. Bovendien duikt Beloved op om de schijnbare rust aan de kaak te stellen: ze eist erkenning voor haar bestaan en begrip voor het lijden dat zijzelf en de zwarte gemeenschap van Cincinnati hebben ondergaan. Wat vergeten is omdat het teveel pijn doet, verdwijnt niet maar wordt een schim die steeds onverwacht kan opduiken. Van der Spek vraagt zich af hoe de geesten uit Beloved (Nederlandse) witte vrouwen beroeren. Ook in het Nederlandse verleden en heden waren geesten rond. Inez van der Spek pleit voor een erkenning van het bloed dat aan de handen van onze voorouders kleeft, en eveneens voor een erkenning van de 'goede geesten', de rijkdom van de landen waarmee Nederland verweven is. | ||

Morrison. Focussing on one possible interpretation of Beloved, namely reading it as a ghost narrative, she contributes to the 'polyglossia of spirit', id est dealing with the spirit which does justice to the cultural and religious pluriformity and which is politically and cosmologically concerned . Contrary to Western ghost stories, Beloved represents a certain continuity of the known world. Moreover, she appears to challenge the peace: she demands recognition of her existence, and understanding for the suffering she and the black community of Cincinnati had to undergo. What is forgotten since it causes too much pain, becomes a ghost that can always appear unexpectedly. Van der Spek raises the question how the ghosts of Beloved touch Dutch, white women. Por in the Dutch history, similar ghosts of the colonial period exist. Inez van der Spek pleads to recognise the blood at the hands of our ancestors, as well as the 'good spirits', the riches of the countries the Netherlands are connected with. | ||
