Today, perhaps more than «supplement», it needs «an entire soul» (Cardinal Lustiger). In reverting back to this metaphor, I would like to expose the deep cultural, moral and spiritual crisis (much more than economic and financial) that the European continent is confronting, and to enquire as to how it affects the Church, and how the Church can help Europe (in what way and how?) «not to miss the opportunity of the present», to snap out of its «demoralization» and to recover its «soul» and its «mission». Two phenomena, very difficult and challenging, in a state of virulence, can serve as a basis of proof and radical questioning of the current identity and mission of Europe: Jihadist terrorist attacks on fundamental freedoms and the humanitarian crisis of thousands of refugees and immigrants who, fleeing from war, violence and misery, are desperately trying to reach Europe. Both issues are enormously complex, resist any attempt at simplification, and possess an extremely high potential for destabilization. Both raise far-reaching questions concerning our way of life and the values that we say that we defend and practice. I believe that the Church has something to say on both issues and a testimony on life to set forth, if she «goes forth» (Evangelii gaudium, 20). | ||
520 | |a A mediados del siglo pasado, Robert Schuman, el político católico francés de origen germano-luxemburgués y uno de los padres de Europa, habló del «suplemento de alma» que necesita el Viejo Continente. Hoy acaso más que un «suplemento» necesite «un alma entera» (Cardenal Lustiger). Retomando esa metáfora quiero expresar la honda crisis cultural, moral y espiritual (mucho más que económica y financiera) que vive el continente europeo, y preguntarme cómo afecta a la Iglesia y si ella puede (¿en qué y cómo?) ayudarle a Europa a «no perder su hora», a salir de su «desmoralización» y a recuperar su «alma» y «misión». Dos fenómenos muy duros y difíciles, en plena virulencia, sirven como banco de prueba y cuestionamiento radical a la actual identidad y misión de Europa: el ataque yihadista a las libertades fundamentales y el drama humanitario de miles de refugiados e inmigrantes que, huyendo de la guerra, la violencia o la miseria, buscan desesperadamente llegar a Europa. Ambos asuntos tienen una enorme complejidad, que resiste cualquier afán de simplificación, y un altísimo potencial desestabilizador. Ambos lanzan preguntas radicales a nuestro modo de vida y los valores que decimos defender y practicar. Creo que sobre ambos la Iglesia tiene una palabra que decir y un testimonio de vida que dar, si es «Iglesia en salida» (Evangelii gaudium, 20). | ||
