This article gives information about the national and regional laws upon which the Living Will is founded. By no means should the Living Will be confused with active euthanasia: it consists rather in accepting «orthothanasia», that is, the refusal of unreasonably prolonging the life of the patient, thus so avoiding any futile and painful life support. Living Wills suppose the assertion of the principle of one’s autonomy in the final moments of life in democratic and plural societies. | ||
| 520 | |a El Testamento Vital hace referencia a un documento en el que una persona indica su deseo de que no se le aplique un tratamiento en caso de enfermedad terminal. Está regulado por leyes de carácter autonómico y por la ley estatal en la que se recoge el contenido, la capacidad necesaria para otorgar, la forma de otorgamiento y la posible revocación del documento. En todo caso, el Testamento Vital no debe confundirse con la eutanasia activa sino que se trata de aceptar la ortotanasia, que es la no aplicación de medidas que puedan prolongar irrazonablemente la vida del paciente, es decir, eludir situaciones de encarnizamiento terapéutico. Los documentos de los Testamentos Vitales suponen una afirmación del principio de autonomía de la persona en sus últimos momentos en sociedades democráticas y pluralistas. | ||
