Summary: | This article explores the charisma associated with visionary Nancy Fowler, whose public visions of the Virgin Mary created a popular Catholic pilgrimage site at Conyers, Georgia in the 1990s. Working from a field visit and literature research, I suggest that the charismatic relationship between the visionary and her followers was a three-way alliance that included the apparition site. When Fowler withdrew from public, the site continued to attract followers and assumed importance in its own right. Currently, local Catholic authorities are routinizing the charisma by establishing clerical and institutional oversight. |
