Sans doute l'idéologie intolérante de l'athéisme d'État n'a pas rendu les armes, mais s'ajoutent désormais à cette menace deux autres menaces d'apparences fort contraires: le retour insensible de régimes théocratiques agressifs, mais aussi - chose plus étonnante -, les fièvres auto-immunes des États de tradition libérale dont la neutralité laïque affichée travaille de plus en plus, en réalité, à neutraliser le fait religieux dans la société, à tout le moins à le privatiser. Le document rappelle les droits imprescriptibles de la personne et de la conscience, met en relief la nécessité anthropologique de l'instance communautaire et publique de la religion, ce corps intermédiaire ouvert qui joue son rôle médiateur pour l'accomplissement intégral de la personne et, à l'inverse des communautarismes, n'entend pas se couper des autres instances qualifiantes de la société. | ||
| 520 | |a The concrete conditions in which the theoretical question of religious freedom is posed today have been turned upside down in comparison with the time of Dignitatis humanae at Vatican II. The intolerant ideology of state atheism has certainly not given up, but to this threat are now added two other threats of very opposite appearance: the unobtrusive return of aggressive theocratic regimes, but also - and this is more astonishing - the auto-immune fevers of States of the liberal tradition, whose declared secular neutrality works more and more, in reality, to neutralise the religious presence in society, or at the very least to privatise it. The document recalls the imprescriptible rights of the person and of conscience and highlights the anthropological necessity of the communal and public body of religion, this open intermediary body which plays its role as mediator for the integral fulfilment of the person and, unlike communitarianism, does not intend to cut itself off from the other qualifying bodies in society. | ||
