Pope John Paul II constantly promoted the renewal of the doctrine of natural law, with its fundamental values prior to any social contract, without which an insensitive totalitarianism can dispose of the dignity of persons, beginning with the weakest. The document seeks to update a notion burdened by the suspicion of heteronomy and to recall that the demands of natural law are to be discovered progressively and freely from within personal and collective reason. It is to a "passage to the depths" (John Paul II) that human subjects and societies are invited, where the creative Logos awaits and enlightens them. Pour fonder une éthique des droits de l'homme qui soit acceptée universellement et fondée dans la vérité objective de l'humain, on ne peut s’en tenir au positivisme des législateurs, porteur de contradictions et donc d'inefficacité évidente. Le pape Jean-Paul II a constamment promu le renouvellement de la doctrine de la loi naturelle, avec ses valeurs fondamentales antérieures à tout contrat social, faute de quoi un totalitarisme insensible peut disposer de la dignité des personnes, en commençant par les plus faibles. Le document cherche à actualiser une notion grevée par le soupçon d'hétéronomie et à rappeler que les exigences de la loi naturelle sont à découvrir progressivement et librement depuis l'intérieur de la raison personnelle et collective.
