Quant à son engagement dans la société de son siècle en proie aux guerres civiles, il est resté d'un bout à l'autre fidèle à l'Église catholique et au roi de France, donc opposé aux protestants, pour lui doctrinaires et séditieux (adversaires toutefois plus qu'ennemis), mais sans se référer à un principe de tolérance. | ||
