The challenges mounted through the second half of the 20th century to the orthodox view of biblical authority and its relevance have had an impact on educational philosophy and practice, and this article's insights remain substantially undated when considering the issues which have been advanced. The name of Dr. Bill Andersen, M.A., M.Ed. (Sydney), Dip. R.E. (M.C.D), Ph.D. (London), M.A.Ps.S., F.A.C.E., is familiar to readers of the Journal of Christian Education, with articles published herein on a range of educational topics since the first issue in 1958. He was formerly Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of Sydney, and in recent years Warden of Morling Theological College, Sydney. He continues to maintain his long-time interests in the philosophy of education and the development of a Christian approach to counselling.
