In early July 1943, Post had to flee and handed over responsibility for one major part of his rescue operation, the sheltering of a number of Jews, to Arnold Douwes, who had joined the movement seven months before. Under Douwes’ leadership, the movement grew steadily and helped over 200 Jewish fugitives survive the war, one of the most important rescue operations in Nazi-occupied Europe. | ||
