Summary: | This translation of Kathrin Hoffmann-Curtius’s Bilder zum Judenmord (2014) begins provocatively. By leaving the title in the original language, the author indicates that she wishes to address directly the mass murder of European Jewry, choosing a term that “sums up the events as precisely as possible,” while rejecting the “usual term … [“Holocaust,” which] introduces a religious justification for the events” (p. 15). This is a remarkable volume, filled with color plates and engaging historical and visual cross references, which aims to tell a story of twenty years of postwar artistic representation of the Shoah. In a brief foreword, Hoffmann-Curtius outlines clarifications and additions made for this new English translation. |
