Notwithstanding its brevity, Levi's statement embraces the dilemma Holocaust studies has faced from the start: although the facts of the Holocaust (the what) and their interrelatedness (the how) can be known, even an incomplete understanding of its reasons (the why) eludes us. Levi's letter is reprinted in The Drowned and the Saved, where he develops his concept of the “Grey Zone.
