However, this position changed after the SPD leadership under Kurt Schumacher, himself a former concentration camp inmate, concluded that it needed to pay closer attention to the ‘national’ interest in order to obtain support from national-minded voters This influenced the party to denounced unpopular Allied programs, including war crimes trials.
