The author suggests that this absence of moral self-questioning is a result of local historical experience and of the ways the Holocaust in particular entered the Poles' memory. Not recognizing the mythic qualities of anti-Jewishness allows for a clear conscience. With the increasing understanding of the Jew comes the potential for serious reflection on the Holocaust, thus acceptance of a broader moral responsibility.
