Thecla’s popularity in the fourth and fifth centuries, even among church fathers, is well established. To explain her prominence, scholars argue that the radical Thecla was “domesticated” in later versions. In this paper, Hylen explores the fifth-century Life and Miracles of Saint Thecla to counter the prevailing view that the later Thecla is watered down. Rather, the Thecla of this work retains and expands her charismatic and leadership roles.
