Numerous comments on this prayer are known, ones formulated by bishops who were active in catechesis. Ambrose in Milan and Cyril in Jerusalem provided this catechesis after baptism—during Easter Week—whereas Theodore in Mopsuestia and Augustine in Hippo Regius provided it before the baptism itself. This was also the practice in Rome, according to the Gelasian Sacramentary. These catechises commented on the Our Father phrase by phrase. The request for bread gave rise to an explanation of the Eucharist. The catecheses presented the Our Father as a prayer of children adopted by God at baptism. It was necessary to remain standing for the recitation of the prayer and this signified resurrection (Constitutiones apostolicae).
