Until a few years ago all parties agreed that religious education was an affair not of the state but of the priests alone. The Italian Parliament abolished chairs of theology in the universities in 1873, and rejected in 1908 the proposal to give religious instruction in the schools. This article summarizes the factors contributing to the rapprochement between the Vatican and the Fascisti government which has resulted in a mutual willingness to allow confessional instruction in the primary schools.
