Description
Summary:On 5 May 1988, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, the founder of the Society of St Pius X, and Cardinal Ratzinger, the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, both signed a Protocol of Agreement consisting of both doctrinal and juridical elements, elaborating points of agreement between the society and the Holy See. But within a few weeks, on 19 June, Lefebvre published a statement ceasing negotiations with the Holy See, revoking and undermining the aforementioned agreement, stating that 'the atmosphere is no longer one of fraternal collaboration and pure and simple recognition of the Society'. What led to this capricious action and precarious situation, which became the harbinger of the excommunication of Lefebvre and four bishops ordained on 30 June? This article will look at the canonical status of the events that transpired in 1988, then analyse the underpinning elements of conflict, namely the Second Vatican Council and the French Revolution.
