520 |a The text BHO 1093 is a sermon in Sahidic Coptic in honour of the protomartyr. Although the identification of the author was uncertain until now, the discovery by Alin Suciu of a fragment from the University of Michigan has allowed the authorship of this text to be recovered and is attributed to Bishop John II of Jerusalem (386-417). Because of several glaring anachronisms, it seems doubtful that this sermon is by the hand of the Hierosolymitan bishop. It is more likely to be a pseudepigrapha from the "hagiographic cycles", a Coptic genre of the 6th and 7th centuries. However, this homily not only has the singularity of being the only one attributed, in all Coptic literature, to John II of Jerusalem, but it also reveals precious data on the transmission of the Hagiopolitan liturgy in the Coptic world.
