However, for much of the last 500 years, the two strands of Protestantism were antagonists rather than close allies. Disagreements over Eucharistie doctrine as well as different approaches to music, the arts, and educational and social reform thwarted attempts at reconciliation although ecumenical conversations between theologians of the two confessions did occur, starting with the 1529 Marburg Colloquy. Only since the mid-twentieth century have Lutherans and Reformed entered into lasting agreements that have resulted in the ' full communion" relationship of today.
