Presbyterians raised the issue of the separation of church and state in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1980s, but this article demonstrates that Roman Catholic movement into mainstream U.S. life and improved Protestant-Catholic relations following World War II meant that the response to Reagan's action was much more muted than in the past.
