520 |a During World War II, an American missionary to China named Frank Wilson Price enjoyed unprecedented access to Chiang Kai-shek, leader of Nationalist China. Throughout World War II and in the postwar period, Price served as Chiang's political advisor. He stood before the leader as an American Isaiah, frankly telling Chiang about his government's corruption and ineffectiveness. Price warned that failure to reform and bring about democracy would deny Chiang the support of the Chinese people and the United States against Chinese communism. However, the American missionary's experience reveals that his actual influence on Chiang's policymaking proved limited if not nonexistent.
