As national churches emerged and became autonomous, everyone's understanding was that the foreign missions would go out of business. The dissolution of the Missions, however, proved to be a long and painful process and nowhere has this process been better mirrored than in Brazil, whose mission organization became the last in the world (for U.S. Presbyterians) to go.
