However, Dabney did not bifurcate his public and theological thought, but rather forged a public theology that united theological conservatism with social and economic traditionalism. In doing so, Dabney articulated the position of a significant number of southern white Protestants in the postbellum South, placing Dabney within a southern conservative tradition—religious, political, and cultural—that extended well into the twentieth century.
