In the West, nuns, like many other pioneer immigrants, tested themselves – physically, culturally, intellectually, spiritually – and in each category pushed back existing gender boundaries. As a result, the sisters, living in an era when the roles of women shifted with rapidity in both public and private spheres, had a major impact on the growth of the Catholic Church in the United States, the building of the community in the West, and the transformation of the European monastery into the American convent.
