Should he be the second member of the Congregation of Holy Cross so honored? In a career that spanned half a century, Peyton, through radio, film, and most especially international crusades, preached the simple but profound message that "the family that prays together stays together." Peyton's spirituality was rooted in his devotion to the Virgin Mary, whom he credited with his miraculous recovery from tuberculosis, and the family rosary. He developed his ideas from his childhood experiences in County Mayo, Ireland and exported them to the United States which became his home. Considering himself "Mary's donkey," he worked tirelessly for the promotion of family prayer as the solution to the family meltdown which many Catholics perceived in American society as early as the 1920s. His energy, single-minded devotion, and one-track thinking were not attainable by many who joined his work. Additionally, his penchant for control and inability to accept what he perceived to be lesser dedication in others, led to significant conflicts between Peyton and many of his co-workers. Yet, despite problems, Peyton's holiness was felt by many and his influence upon millions, including the stars of radio, television, and film, through electronic media and personal contact, was highly significant. Peyton's life is a good example of a spirituality of popular devotion that was transformed into a worldwide ministry of prayer.
