It argues that their shared cultural background helped the sisters to sustain each other in a harsh frontier environment, where the forces of Americanization created an ever increasing presence. Ultimately, the demand for English language usage imposed an American identity on their mission work and convent lives. For these French Canadian sisters, the Pacific Northwest exacted significant cultural transformation, while illuminating the overlooked importance of the West in the emergence of the American church.
