Итог: | A medieval monastic chapter room was a space within the confines of a community living under a religious Rule.1 The particular object of this study is the chapter room of Montecassino, the original resting place of Saint Benedict. Chapter rooms were places where members gathered together to act as an entire corporate body to do the things that lay outside the sacramental life of the chapel and the communal table of the refectory. Scholars over the past generation have made great progress in bringing to light the history of chapter rooms, both in a general way and in the study of individual cases.2 This study draws on the wealth of their knowledge. The first consideration is the origin of the chapter room of Montecassino; secondly, the Cassinese chapter room in a wider European context; and thirdly, the chapter room in the lives of the Cassinese monks. |
