520 |a The Historia Johannis is an unjustly neglected Syriac apocryphon. Last edited by Wright in 1871, the text now receives a long overdue fresh edition and discussion. The author discusses the history of research (which is very slight), provides an entirely fresh overview of the manuscript evidence, discusses the usual questions of date and provenance (arguing for an Edessene provenance and an early fifth-century date), and provides a text with apparatus and a facing English translation. The introduction is concise and well argued. The suggestion that the narrative arose in the context of the christological debates in Syria following on from the Council of Ephesus is attractive and persuasive; although my own reading of the text leads me to feel that it is written from the standpoint of Rabbula, rather than Ibas, as the author seems to suggest, what is important here is that the very question is opened by the editor, and fresh evidence thus supplied through this edition. The Historia is also a very important witness to the history of the baptismal rite; Lollar concentrates on the baptismal formula employed, which is perhaps an underappreciated aspect, though the text also provides evidence for the syntaxis (which, like that known to Theodore of Mopsuestia, is trinitarian in form) and for the pattern of anointing. Again, the author has provided a significant service through the edition of this text.
