De plus, il est devenu manifeste que l’univers mental de la population d’une colonie est conditionné par l’amalgame des identités grecque et indigène. Plusieurs grands cultes dans le nord de l’Égée et en Mer Noire, comme à Abdère, Odessos, Olbia, Chersonnèse, ou au Bosphore cimmérien, affichent à la fois des composantes grecques et locales, de nature et d’importance variables selon les lieux. L’appropriation de dieux indigènes peut enfin être considérée comme partie intégrante de l’appropriation du territoire local et de ses traditions. Tant l’adaptation des dieux helléniques à un contexte neuf que le culte des dieux locaux commencent à une époque ancienne, et ils s’avèrent un puissant mécanisme cognitif pour établir des liens viables à l’environnement, pour forger les relations entre divers groupes ethniques, ou pour façonner l’image que la population se fait d’elle-même ainsi que l’identité communautaire. Les nouveautés cultuelles s’expriment le plus souvent par une nouvelle dénomination des dieux, ou l’adaptation de leurs épithètes, de façon à mettre en évidence la transformation de leur nature et de leurs fonctions. | ||
| 520 | |a Strong links between the cults of apoikiai and metropoleis, forging the Hellenic identity of the colonists, have long been recognised. It becomes increasingly clear that in addition, the mental world of the population of colonies was conditioned by an amalgamation of Greek and local identities. Many important cults of Greek cities in the northern Aegean and the Black Sea area, such as Abdera, Odessus, Olbia, Chersonesus, and the Cimmerian Bosporus, featured both Greek and indigenous elements, their scope and nature varying from place to place. Appropriation of local gods can also be viewed as part of appropriation of the local territory and its traditions. The adaptation of Hellenic gods to the new setting and worship of local gods started at an early stage and served as a powerful cognitive mechanism establishing safe ties to the environment, mediating between different ethnic groups, and shaping people’s self-image and communal identity. The innovations in cult were often expressed by changing names or epithets of deities, emphasizing the change in their nature and functions. | ||
