Summary: | In 1996, the Protestant Church of Germany (EKD) published a guideline on how Protestant churches in Germany should deal with homosexuals in congregations and among clergy. While criticizing discrimination and legal prosecution, the paper denied theological and liturgical recognition on the basis of anti-homosexual positions in biblical, theological, and ecclesial tradition. Within twenty-five years, the EKD’s position changed towards a more diverse and inclusive understanding of sexuality, marriage, and family, following transformations within secular society and the establishment of legal equality for homosexual and heterosexual lifelong partnerships. The essay reflects on these transformations in relation to the author’s personal experience as a gay person in church ministry as an example of queer clergy, raising the question about the effect of the transformation process on a subjective and generic theory of ministry.
