| 520 | |a A number of practitioners have attempted to demonstrate the positive effects of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (or so-called "traditional medicine," hereinafter referred to as "CAM"). Some CAM treatments achieve results; for example, lower back pain can be improved to some extent by acupuncture (needle therapy).However, acupuncture, massage, and other CAM treatments can produce a variety of side effects. In September 2017, a Japanese baseball team reported that one of the players was temporarily paralyzed because of acupuncture treatment by a team trainer.Efficacy research is important for those who use CAM. How should we measure the effectiveness of CAM? This paper will discuss research on the effectiveness of CAM, using Japanese CAM as an example.Kampo has its roots in ancient Chinese medicine and is a traditional Japanese medicine with a history of over 1,500 years. In a broad sense, Kampo included manipulative therapy (Japanese Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Judo reduction, Japanese Traditional Anma Massage, Shiatsu (acupressure), etc.), Japanese herbal medicine (Kampo-yaku), and health management methods (Youjou-hou).When the Japanese social system westernized around 1870 (Meiji period), acupuncture and moxibustion were institutionalized for vocational support of visually impaired people. Judo reduction became a side job of the judoist. Japanese herbal medicine was recognized as a non-standard medical treatment.
