Embora baptizados e frequentando a igreja muitos destes ex‑Judeus e ex‑Mouros permaneciam no interior dos seus lares, outros na sua consciência, na sua fé ancestral Orando ao Deus de Abraão, de Isaac e de Jacob ou invocando Alá, os neófitos afirmavam‑se o “outro” na sociedade portuguesa e mantinham vivas as tradições da sua fé. A liberdade era alcançada pela fuga para outras paragens, a Europa ou o norte de África. Os negócios permitiam a saída e a liberdade religiosa era encontrada nas cidades italianas, no império turco ou em Marrocos. Entre duas religiões, em busca do Deus verdadeiro e da salvação da alma, os cristãos‑novos viviam divididos entre o “ser” e o “não ser”. Alimentava as partidas e as chegadas a assumpção de uma identidade, bebida no leite materno, desejada e receada. | ||
| 520 | |a When king Manuel I proclaimed the religious unity, defining Roman Catholicism as the only religion allowed in Portugal and imposing that Jews and Moors should be baptized or leave the kingdom, he was far from imagining that his religious politic would be unsuccessful in many cases. In spite having been baptized and attending church services, many of these former Jews and former Moors still maintained their ancestral faith inside their homes or in their own conscience Praying to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob or invoking Allah, the neophytes claimed to be the “Other” in the Portuguese society and preserved their traditions and ancient faith. Freedom was obtained by fleeing to other regions, inside Europe or north Africa and Turk empire. Business and trade provided for this exit and religious freedom was found in Italian Cities, in the Turkish Empire or in Morocco. Living between two religions, and seeking for the true God and the salvation of the soul, the «cristãos‑novos» were divided between «being» and «not being». Departures and arrivals were nurtured by the assumption of an identity simultaneously wanted and feared. | ||
